Side by Side Counselling was established in 2007 by three counsellors — Luke Entwistle, Lyn Renn, and Paula Gregg — who shared a vision of creating a fully person-centred organisation. Their aim was to build a service that is supportive, welcoming, and encouraging for both clients and volunteers.
In 2011, a volunteer-led committee was formed to help guide the organisation, ensuring it continues to grow, evolve, and meet the needs of the community.
We offer a service grounded in unconditional positive regard, with no compulsory cost to clients, ensuring counselling remains accessible to those who need it.
We are honoured to receive recognition through The King’s Award.
This achievement belongs to every volunteer, counsellor, supporter, and client who has been part of Side by Side. It highlights the importance of compassionate mental health support within the community and encourages us to continue making counselling accessible to those who need it.
A selection of the committee were invited to The Monastery Manchester alongside other services from across Greater Manchester. We were proud to represent the whole of Side by Side Counselling Service on such a special occasion.
Luke and Amanda, as Head of Service and Chair of the Committee, were also invited to Buckingham Palace, where they had the honour of representing Side by Side Counselling Service at another memorable and proud moment for the organisation.
We were later invited to meet the Mayor and Mayoress of Oldham for tea and conversation, along with a tour of the newly refurbished Old Library building, which now houses offices for the Mayor and local government. During the visit, we were also given the opportunity to look around the council chambers and galleries.
Side By Side Counselling have been awarded 'The Quality in Action' award from Action Together. Their representative, Jane, presented some of our volunteers with their certificates. This prestigious award recognises the important work our volunteers do with our local communities.

Our dedicated volunteers come together to share food and drink, connect, and continue spreading the word about this essential service.
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and to all our volunteers for their tireless commitment to supporting our community.
